King Sverre’s castle
This was the country's largest stone castle, and it played an important role when the Birkebeiner King Sverre fought against the Kuvlung and Baglers for control of the country.
King Sverre's castle
On a steep mountain knoll above Steinberget in Trondheim, with fine views over the city, lie the ruins of the castle that King Sverre built as a defence against the many attacks on Nidaros during the civil war.
This was also his royal seat. The castle was built in the winter of 1182-83 and is the oldest known stone castle in Norway. The mountain know on which the castle is situated constituted a natural foundation and made the defence of the castle relatively easy.
